I come from a small farming community that made headlines for their cancer clusters. After a bunch of protests etc etc aided by Cesar Chavez they were forced to give us a monthly report on whether our water was safe to drink that month. But get this... we would get January's report on February..... and it went a little something like this: "January's water contained a high level of (insert bad chemicals here) and you should not have drank it. If you did, then oops..sorry about that"

Interesting. When I go on long hikes I've always brought chlorine drops to purify my drinking water. I guess that's kind of pointless. Good to know.

I guess it does make a difference if you're drinking from a stream vs. a lake though.

yep, we're only freaked out because it's usually clear. and it could be clear. if you get water from a creek in the middle of nowhere in the mountains north of here it is clear. and it's tasty. and it's fine. i saw that NO deaths were attributed to waterborne diseases in BC (as of 2004). (warning: pdf page)

in high school i went on an outward boundtrip and we drank creek water. supposedly a natural stream purifies itself every fifteen meters. so when this one girl who was doing a solo camp out discovered a deer carcass 50 meters upcreek from her water source, she was told to calm down. she was totally fine. no sickness, nothing...

how much would a rainstorm cloud up the waters of a lake fed by a creek in an area that had NOT been logged, and was settled and had roots and vegetation? probably not as much. some stuff might get washed into the water, but maybe heavier stuff, or floaty leaves, not fine particulate. i see no natural reason for my water to still be sedimenty. i wonder what kind of extra minerals i'm getting...

i actually think if people in china and iraq had clearer water theyd be as freaked out as we are by brown water. its different than the norm, so there must be something wrong.
as for what chris said above, i have a friend that prefers to piss outside, and will go in the bushes even if we are in a place with toilets. dont see many girls doing that. also, it is way more important to wash your hands before going to the washroom than after, but its the "truthiness" not the facts, that convince people what to do. like some bathrooms here have levers on the paper towel dispensers that youre supposed to use your arm on, not your hands, even though everything you touch later (the bathroom door, your chair, etc) is covered with the same stuff. its all in peoples heads.

That's scary, a fist fight over bottled water. Gonna have to get back to the gym if I want to survive I guess.

I've decided to stop washing my hands after a piss. Or flusing the toilet (except for shits) or the urinal either. That's what I'm going to do to make the world a better place. I was taking a dump yesterday at work here, and this accountant came in took a quick leak. Then he must've pulled like a dozen heavy paper towels out of the dispenser and used about a gallon of (probably hot) water and Christ knows how much pink soap to scrub down afterwards. Okay... maybe if you somehow, after all your years of practice peeing, still managed to pee all over your hands... but even then, 1 towel oughta do it. Right? Or just wipe 'em on your pants. Urine's totally sterile, right? People drink it for some fucked up health reason or other even? Hope this helps.
